Ijen Crater: The Electric Blue Flame & Turquoise Acid Lake

If you’re looking for an adventure that is raw, dramatic, and completely unique, Ijen Crater is it. Located on the easternmost tip of Java, this spectacular crater is famous for a natural phenomenon found in only two places on Earth: the hypnotic Electric Blue Flame.

This trip is for the night owls and the true adventurers. The journey starts at midnight with a starry trek up the mountain side. As you descend into the rocky crater in the pitch black, you’ll witness ethereal blue fire dancing along the sulfur vents—a reaction caused by ignited sulfuric gases breaking through cracks in the volcano.

Once daylight breaks, the blue flames fade to reveal a completely different, equally stunning sight: a massive, steaming turquoise lake trapped inside the crater. It is the world’s largest highly acidic crater lake, and the contrast between the toxic turquoise water and the stark white canyon walls is mesmerizing. Along the way, you’ll also meet the incredibly resilient local sulfur miners, who carry up to 90kg of solid sulfur baskets up the steep crater paths.

• Safety First: Gas masks are mandatory due to the strong sulfur fumes. Don’t worry, we provide high-quality masks for all our guests.
• Fitness Level: Moderate to Challenging. The trail is steep for the first 2 kilometers, and descending into the crater requires careful footing on loose rocks.
• What to Wear: Good hiking shoes with solid grip are a must. Layered clothing is recommended as it’s cold at the start but gets warm as you hike.
